Joseph T. Ellis, born October 20, 1828, in Warrington, England, was a skilled carpenter and builder. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1853, he crossed the plains to Utah and helped lay out the town of Spring City. Ellis played a key role in early Utah settlement—serving as postmaster, justice of the peace, city council member, assessor, and city attorney.. He was the foreman of carpenters on the Manti temple responsible for the spiral staircase.
