James Larsen, our founder, deeply values the pioneering spirit that defines the immigrant experience. His own heritage is rooted in that legacy. His direct ancestors were among the first Mormon pioneers to enter the Salt Lake Valley, where they built a stockade at what is now Pioneer Park. His great-great-uncle, Tarlton Lewis, served as the first bishop of Salt Lake City and later founded the town of Parowan, Utah, under the direction of Brigham Young. Tarlton’s brother, Benjamin Lewis, was tragically killed by a mob in Missouri—before Tarlton made the westward journey with a bullet still lodged in his body.
The Lewis family entered what was then Mexican territory and, against all odds, helped the desert "blossom like a rose." Other immigrant ancestors in James’s family went on to found the city of Mesa, Arizona, construct the iconic spiral staircase of the Manti, Utah Temple, and—more recently—develop a groundbreaking method for the mass production of penicillin during World War II. James is proud of his rich pioneer and immigrant heritage.
He sees a powerful parallel between those early settlers and today’s immigrants—modern-day pioneers who face adversity with resilience in pursuit of a better life. That connection inspires James’s commitment to serve.
From 1986 to 2006, James developed deep ties to his community, growing up alongside the children of migrant farm workers and learning Spanish at Cherry Hill Elementary School. These early experiences shaped his values and his mission. Today, he's expanding his service area to give back to the very communities that helped raise him.

He was the foreman of carpenters on the Manti temple responsible for the spiral staircase.
